It's all about jogging

Top of the morning to you & a Happy St Patrick's Day 🍀 and welcome to our midweek blog for Week 4, Run 2.

The coaches in our C25K app often remind us not to go too fast and to keep our pace to a "light jog" but what exactly is jogging?

Well, jogging is slower than running but faster than walking whilst sustaining a steady pace. The main reason for jogging is to maintain your pace without putting your body under too much strain. As jogging is less taxing on our bodies, we consume less energy which should help us to sustain it for a longer period of time.

There are many benefits of jogging and here are just a few:

Good for the heart – Jogging is a great cardiovascular workout which is good for the health of your heart. Jogging ensures blood is pumped faster to the heart which helps maintain blood pressure. It also helps to keep cholesterol and blood glucose levels under control too.

Develop muscles - Jogging helps you to become more toned. It works on and develops the large muscles and is good for hamstrings, calves, and gluts.

Improve bone strength – Jogging can help maintain bone health. When you start jogging, your bones experience some stress and load, however jogging on a regular basis prepares the bones to bear this additional stress and can strengthen the bone and prevent bone trauma injuries. It can also make the bones of the hip and spine stronger.

Build the immune system – Jogging has been known to reduce fatigue and boost the production of white blood cells in the body which can build up your immunity.

Keep the mind healthy – Jogging can improve the mental health of a person by releasing endorphins that help lift your mood which leads to that post-workout glow. It has been known to reduce stress and tension and clear the mind of unnecessary thoughts resulting in a positive outlook.

Boosts the respiratory system – Your lung capacity and strength of muscles in your respiratory system can be enhanced by aerobic exercise and jogging falls into this category. Your lungs take in more oxygen and efficiently remove carbon dioxide improving the endurance of your respiratory muscles.

Anti-Ageing benefits – Jogging ensures your skin receives more blood and oxygen which can lead to the skin taking on a fresh and youthful appearance.

So grab your trainers and a bottle of water and go for a gentle jog – the chances are you will feel amazing afterwards!
